Planning cameras for a family home
Cover the main gate, the boundary wall where it is easiest to climb, the courtyard and the front door. For a typical home in this area that is four to six cameras. Mount above three metres, put the recorder inside and lockable, and light the gate if you can.
Gate and weak wall first
Entry comes over the lowest or most sheltered stretch of boundary, or straight through the gate. Those two positions earn their cameras before anything indoors does.
Height and reach
Above three metres puts the camera out of casual reach. Below that, the camera is the first thing that gets covered or pulled off the wall.
Recorder inside
A recorder in a porch or an outbuilding is taken along with everything else. It belongs inside the house, ideally in a cupboard that locks.
Light beats megapixels
One modest lamp over the gate improves night footage more than a resolution upgrade, and it deters as well.

How many cameras does a normal house need?
Four to six for a typical compound: gate, boundary, courtyard and front door, with one spare position for a blind spot found during the survey. Larger compounds need more because of wall length, not because of the building.
Should I put a camera inside the house?
Most families choose not to, beyond an entrance hall. The cameras that matter are the ones covering the ways in. Interior cameras raise privacy questions inside your own home that are worth thinking about first.
