What solar actually costs, line by line
A package price tells you nothing. Two quotes for “5 kW” can differ by half and be describing genuinely different systems. Here is a real quotation with every line visible, and then what actually moves the number.
What moves the price
Ranked by how much they typically shift a domestic quote. Note where panels sit — the thing most quotes lead with is now the smallest variable in the total.
- Battery storage
The single largest variable. Hybrid with a usable bank can approach the cost of the rest of the system combined.
- Inverter quality
Hybrid costs meaningfully more than on-grid. Brand and warranty length move it further.
- Mounting complexity
A clear flat slab is cheap. A broken roof with tanks, stairwells and shading costs more in structure and labour.
- Cable runs
Distance from array to inverter, and inverter to distribution board. Longer runs need thicker cable, which is not cheap.
- Panel choice
Now the smallest variable in most quotes. Panel prices have fallen further than anything else in the system.
The two lines never to cut
Mounting. Ballasted frames sitting on a slab under their own weight move in a Potohar storm. Frames must be anchored. A panel leaving a roof is a serious matter and it is always a mounting decision, never a panel one.
DC cable. Undersized cable loses generation every hour of every day for twenty-five years and runs warm doing it. It is invisible in a quote and it is where a suspiciously cheap number usually comes from.
Sample quotation
5 kW on-grid, family home
| Qty | Item | PKR |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 550 W monocrystalline panel | 192,500 |
| 1 | 5 kW on-grid inverter | 165,000 |
| 1 | Galvanised mounting structure, anchored | 78,000 |
| 1 | DC cable, conduit, connectors, earthing | 42,000 |
| 1 | AC cable, isolators, protection devices | 28,000 |
| 1 | Installation labour and commissioning | 85,000 |
| Installed total | 590,500 | |
Net metering application quoted separately at PKR 45,000.
Battery storage, if wanted, is an additional line — see below.
No “miscellaneous” line. Ever.
Adding batteries
A hybrid inverter and a usable bank typically adds PKR 250,000 to 600,000 depending on lithium or lead-acid and how much you want to keep running.
Compare the two properlyQuestions about price
- How much does a 5 kW solar system cost in Pakistan?
- Installed, on-grid, expect PKR 550,000 to 750,000 in this district. The same 5 kW as a hybrid with a usable battery bank costs substantially more, because the batteries are the largest single line — not the panels.
- Why do two solar quotes for the same size differ so much?
- Almost always the inverter and whether storage is included. A quote naming panel wattage but not the inverter model is hiding the component most likely to fail and the one that decides whether you can add batteries later.
- What should I never cut to save money on solar?
- Mounting and DC cable. Ballasted frames move in a Potohar storm and undersized cable wastes generation permanently while running warm. Both are invisible in a quote and both cost far more than they saved.
