Where you may and may not point a camera
Cameras should cover your own property. Pointing one directly into a neighbour's courtyard, window or doorway invites a legitimate complaint and, in a dispute, can undermine the footage you wanted to rely on. Angle cameras to cover your boundary and your entrance, not next door.
Cover your boundary, not theirs
A camera on your wall aimed along your own frontage is uncontroversial. The same camera turned fifteen degrees to watch a neighbour's door is a dispute waiting to happen.
Public street frontage
Some overlap with the street is unavoidable and generally accepted where it is incidental to covering your own entrance. Deliberately monitoring the street beyond your frontage is a different matter.
Audio raises the stakes
Recording conversation is more sensitive than recording images. We advise switching audio off on any camera covering a shared or public space.
Tell people it is there
A visible sign at the entrance is good practice, and in a workplace it matters. Staff should know cameras exist and where they are.
Is it legal to point a CCTV camera at the street?
Can I put a camera covering my shop doorway?
Yes. Covering your own entrance is exactly what a shop camera is for, and incidental capture of the pavement in front of it is normal. Keep the aim on your frontage rather than sweeping the street.
My neighbour's camera points at my gate. What can I do?
Speak to them first — most cases are thoughtless aiming rather than intent, and a small adjustment solves it. We regularly re-aim cameras for exactly this reason when asked.
