Number plate cameras: how ANPR actually performs
A number plate camera uses a narrow lens, a fast shutter and dedicated infra-red to capture plates on moving vehicles, then software reads the characters. Placement matters more than the camera: the shot must be close to head-on, and lighting must be controlled. Used for gates, petrol pumps and society entrances.
Angle is everything
A plate read at more than about thirty degrees off-centre starts failing. That usually means a dedicated camera at the gate doing nothing but plates, separate from the camera showing the scene.
Speed limits accuracy
Capture is reliable up to roughly 30 to 60 km/h depending on the model. At a society gate or a fuel forecourt that is fine. On an open road it is not, and we will say so.
What it can be wired to
A recognised plate can open a barrier automatically, log an entry against a whitelist, or trigger an alert for a plate on a watch list. That integration is where the value is.
Honest failure rate
Dirty plates, damaged plates, non-standard fonts and glare all cause misses. Expect useful rather than perfect, and keep a fixed camera on the same gate so you have the scene when the read fails.
How do number plate recognition cameras work?
Will ANPR work with Pakistani number plates?
Yes for standard-issue plates in reasonable condition. Custom, decorative and heavily weathered plates read less reliably. We test at the actual gate before quoting rather than promising a figure from a brochure.
Can it open my gate automatically?
Yes. A recognised plate on your whitelist can trigger the barrier or sliding motor. That is one of the most useful things ANPR does, and it needs the gate automation and the camera to be specified together.
Need this doing?
Business CCTV covers the till, the stock room, the entrance and the delivery door — the four points where losses actually happen. Systems are sized to your retention needs and can be linked to access control and point of sale. Expect PKR 70,000 upwards depending on premises size.
