PTZ cameras: when a moving camera is worth it

A PTZ camera pans, tilts and zooms under remote or automatic control, covering a large area with one unit. It suits yards, mills and housing societies. The catch is that a PTZ only records where it is currently pointing, so it should supplement fixed cameras rather than replace them.

What it is genuinely good at

Large open areas where you want to follow something — a factory yard, a society entrance, a grain compound. One PTZ can cover ground that would take six fixed cameras to watch.

The trap everyone falls into

A PTZ pointing north records nothing happening to the south. If it is your only camera, you have bought a very expensive way to miss things. Fixed cameras cover the ground; the PTZ investigates.

Preset tours

The camera can cycle between saved positions automatically. Useful, but it means each position is only watched part of the time. Set the tour so the highest-risk position is visited most often.

Auto-tracking

Better models lock onto movement and follow it. It works well in an empty yard at night and poorly on a busy forecourt, where it will chase every passing customer.

Can one PTZ replace several fixed cameras?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. A PTZ records only its current view. Use fixed cameras for continuous coverage and a PTZ on top of them for detail and pursuit.

How much more does a PTZ cost?

Several times a fixed camera, plus a heavier mount and often a dedicated power run. For most shops it is not the right spend. For a mill yard or a society gate it can be.

Need this doing?

Business CCTV covers the till, the stock room, the entrance and the delivery door — the four points where losses actually happen. Systems are sized to your retention needs and can be linked to access control and point of sale. Expect PKR 70,000 upwards depending on premises size.
