The recorder will not start
A recorder that shows no lights is usually a failed power adaptor rather than a failed recorder. If it powers up but restarts repeatedly, suspect the hard drive or overheating. Recorders in sealed cupboards with no ventilation fail early, and that is a common cause here.
Try a known-good adaptor
External power adaptors fail far more often than recorders. Testing with a matching adaptor separates a cheap fix from an expensive one in two minutes.
Repeated restarts
A recorder that boots and reboots is often struggling with a failing drive. Disconnecting the drive and seeing whether it boots cleanly is a quick diagnostic.
Heat
A recorder in an unventilated cupboard in summer will shut down. Moving it somewhere with airflow fixes a fault that otherwise recurs every hot afternoon.
My CCTV recorder will not turn on. What now?
Will I lose my footage if the recorder is replaced?
Not necessarily. Footage lives on the hard drive, and a drive can often be moved into a compatible replacement recorder. Tell us the footage matters before we start.
Is it worth repairing an old recorder?
If it is more than five or six years old and no longer receives firmware updates, replacement usually makes more sense — especially if it is reachable from the internet.
