Upgrading an older CCTV system
Usually yes. Existing coaxial cable often carries modern analogue cameras up to 5MP, so a camera and recorder upgrade can reuse the cabling — the most expensive part of the original install. A hybrid recorder lets you add IP cameras alongside the old ones.
The cable is the expensive bit
Cable and labour usually cost more than the cameras. If the existing runs test sound, an upgrade can cost a fraction of a fresh install.
Test before promising
Old cable is not always in the condition people assume. Corroded joints and crushed runs are common. We test each run before recommending reuse, because a failed reuse costs more than a rewire.
Hybrid recorders
A hybrid takes analogue and IP together, so you can keep working cameras and add high-resolution coverage only where it matters — typically the entrance and the till.
Storage first
Higher-resolution cameras need more storage for the same retention. Upgrading cameras without upgrading the drive quietly shortens how far back your footage goes.
Can I upgrade my old CCTV without replacing everything?
Is it cheaper to upgrade or start again?
Upgrade, in most cases, if the cabling is sound — that is where the labour is. If the cable is failing or badly routed, starting again gives a better system for a similar price.
Will new cameras work with my old recorder?
Sometimes, if the resolution and format match. More often the recorder is the limiting factor. We check both before quoting so you are not sold cameras your recorder cannot use.
