Lines or noise across the picture
Horizontal bands rolling up the screen are almost always electrical interference from a mains cable run alongside the video cable, or a ground loop between separately earthed buildings. Random speckled noise is more often a failing camera or a poor connection.
Rolling bands mean interference
Video and mains cable running parallel for any distance picks it up. Rerouting so they cross at right angles rather than running together fixes it permanently.
Ground loops
Long analogue runs between buildings on different earths cause exactly this. A small isolation transformer at the recorder end is the standard cure.
Speckled noise
Random noise, particularly in low light, points at the camera or a corroded connector rather than interference. Reseat the connections first.
What causes lines across a CCTV picture?
Can I fix interference without rewiring?
Sometimes, with an isolation transformer or by moving the offending mains cable. Where the runs are bundled together for metres, rerouting is the only real fix.
It only happens when the machinery runs. Why?
Motors and welders produce strong interference. That timing tells you the cause precisely, and the fix is separating the cable runs rather than changing equipment.
