The picture flickers or rolls
Flickering usually means interference or insufficient power. A picture that rolls with horizontal bands is typically electrical interference from a nearby cable run. A picture that flickers and dims is more often a power supply that cannot hold voltage under load.
Separate power and video runs
Video cable run alongside mains cable picks up interference. Crossing at right angles is fine; running parallel for metres is not. Rerouting fixes it permanently.
Check the supply under load
A supply that measures correctly with no load can sag when the infra-red switches on. Measuring at the camera while it is working tells the real story.
Ground loops
On long analogue runs between separately earthed buildings, a ground loop causes rolling bands. An isolation transformer at the recorder end solves it cheaply.
Why does my CCTV picture flicker?
Could it be the camera itself?
Possible but less likely. Swapping the camera to another channel and another power source narrows it down in a few minutes, and usually clears the camera.
It started when we installed new machinery. Related?
Very probably. Motors and welders are strong interference sources. The fix is usually rerouting the camera cable rather than changing the camera.
