Troubleshooting

The picture has gone blurry or hazy

A gradually hazy picture is almost always a dirty or hazed lens cover rather than a focus fault. Dust, cobwebs and rain spotting build up over months. Solvent cleaners permanently haze polycarbonate dome covers, so a previous cleaning attempt is sometimes the cause.

Clean before you diagnose

A soft damp cloth on the housing resolves most cases. Do this before assuming a fault — it is free and it is usually the answer.

Never use solvent on a dome

Spirit and thinner haze the plastic permanently, and the night picture never recovers. If a cover is already hazed, replacing the cover is cheaper than the camera.

Genuine focus drift

Varifocal cameras can drift if the lock ring was not tightened at install. Refocusing and locking properly is a short job and it stays fixed.

Why has my CCTV picture become blurry?

Can I clean the cameras myself?

Reachable ones, yes — soft cloth, water only. Anything above three metres is worth leaving to a service visit rather than risking a ladder for it.

How often do lenses need cleaning?

Twice a year for most premises, four times near a main road, a mill or a forecourt. Dust is the main enemy in this district and it builds faster than people expect.

Need this doing?

Security camera repair covers cameras showing no image, recorders that stopped recording, footage you cannot retrieve, and systems that lost remote viewing. Most faults are power, cable or configuration rather than a failed camera. Diagnosis is free, and we quote a fixed price before doing any work.
