Costs
Number plate camera cost
A number plate camera costs considerably more than a standard camera because it needs a narrow lens, a fast shutter and dedicated infra-red. Budget for it as a separate camera from the one showing the scene, plus the software or recorder that reads the plates.
It is an extra camera, not a replacement
The plate camera does nothing but plates. You still need a scene camera on the same gate, and quotes that combine the two do not work in practice.
Positioning is part of the cost
The camera must sit close to head-on, which often means a dedicated post or bracket at the right distance from the lane.
What the integration adds
Whitelist barrier opening and entry logging are where the value is, and they need the gate automation specified alongside.
How much does an ANPR camera cost?
Will it read plates reliably?
For standard plates in reasonable condition at gate speeds, yes. Damaged, decorative and heavily weathered plates read less well, and we test at your actual gate before quoting.
Can it open the barrier automatically?
Yes, for plates on your whitelist. That is usually what makes the cost worthwhile, and it needs the camera and gate motor specified together.
