Wireless CCTV: what it solves and what it costs you
Wireless CCTV avoids running data cable, which helps across courtyards and between buildings. Cameras still need power, so it is rarely truly wire-free. Reliability depends entirely on signal strength and interference, and a wired camera will always be more dependable where cable is possible.
Wireless does not mean powerless
Almost every wireless camera still needs a mains or DC supply at the camera end. If you are running power anyway, running data alongside it usually costs very little more.
Where it genuinely wins
Crossing a courtyard, reaching a separate building, or a listed or stone structure where chasing cable is impractical. A point-to-point wireless link between two buildings is often far cheaper than trenching.
What can go wrong
Walls, weather, and other networks on the same channel. A link that tests perfectly in March can degrade when a neighbour installs their own equipment. We site the antennas with line of sight wherever possible.
Battery cameras
Genuinely wire-free battery cameras exist and suit temporary or hard-to-reach positions. They record on motion only, and somebody has to charge them. They are a supplement, not a system.
Is wireless CCTV any good?
Will wireless cameras slow down my internet?
They use your local network rather than your internet connection for recording, so day-to-day they should not. Remote viewing does use upload bandwidth, and several cameras streaming at once will be noticeable on a modest connection.
Can wireless cameras be jammed?
In principle yes, and it is worth knowing before you rely on wireless for a high-risk position. For a boundary wall protecting valuable stock, cable is the safer choice.
Need this doing?
IP cameras use network cable instead of coaxial, carry power over the same cable, and give higher resolution than analogue systems. They suit larger premises, longer cable runs and anyone who may add cameras later. A four-channel IP system starts around PKR 95,000 installed.
