Buying second-hand CCTV equipment
Used recorders and cameras can be sound value when tested and warrantied, but check the hard drive hours, confirm the firmware can still be updated, and make sure the admin password can be reset. A used system with an unresettable password or an obsolete recorder is worth nothing.
The drive is the risk
Surveillance drives wear out with continuous writing. A used recorder with a drive that already has years of hours on it will fail sooner than the price suggests. Budget for a new drive.
Firmware and support
A recorder the manufacturer no longer updates cannot be secured. That is a real problem for anything exposed to the internet, and it is worth checking before buying.
Password reset
Confirm the admin credentials can be reset before money changes hands. A locked recorder nobody can get into is scrap.
What is genuinely fine used
Cameras, brackets, cable and power supplies age well and are usually good value. It is the recorder and the drive where the risk sits.

Can I reuse cameras from my old system?
Often yes, especially with a hybrid recorder. Bring the model numbers to the survey and we will tell you which are worth keeping.
