Watching your cameras from your phone
Remote viewing is set up by installing the recorder manufacturer's app, scanning the recorder's QR code or entering its ID, and creating a password. It works over mobile data as well as WiFi. Always change the default password during setup — that single step prevents most CCTV hijacking.
Test on mobile data, not just WiFi
A system that works on the shop WiFi and fails on mobile data is a configuration problem people discover a week later. We test on both before leaving.
Change the default password
Default credentials are published online for every major brand. An unchanged password is the reason CCTV feeds end up on public streaming sites, and it takes two minutes to prevent.
More than one phone
Set up at least two handsets so access is not lost when a phone breaks or an employee leaves. Use separate logins rather than sharing one.
Upload bandwidth is the limit
Remote viewing consumes your connection's upload capacity, which is usually far smaller than download. Several simultaneous high-resolution streams will struggle on a modest line.
How do I view CCTV on my mobile?
Can I view my cameras from another city?
Yes. As long as the recorder has an internet connection and your phone has signal, distance is irrelevant. We test remote access before handover specifically so this works when you need it.
Is remote viewing safe?
It is if the default password is changed, the firmware is current and access is not exposed unnecessarily. Those three things account for almost every compromised system we have seen.
