DIY CCTV vs professional installation
A basic kit can be self-installed if you are comfortable working at height and running cable. What people most often get wrong is camera positioning, storage sizing and leaving default passwords unchanged. Those three mistakes make footage unusable exactly when it is needed.
What DIY handles fine
A small home kit with short runs and cameras at reachable height. If the box contents match the job, there is no mystery to it.

Cameras aimed to see the scene rather than the face, a drive too small for useful retention, and default passwords left in place. All three are invisible until you need footage.
The height question
Cameras belong above three metres to be out of reach. Most DIY installs sit lower because that is what a domestic ladder reaches, and that is where they get pulled down.

Yes, and it is common work. Usually it needs re-aiming, a bigger drive and the passwords changed rather than replacement — which is a much cheaper visit than people expect.
What is the most common DIY mistake?
Aiming for coverage instead of identification. A camera showing the whole shop from the ceiling records that something happened but not who did it, and that distinction is the entire point.
