2MP vs 4MP cameras
4MP is worth the extra on entrances and tills where you may need to identify a specific face, and not worth it on corridors, stock rooms and general floor coverage. 4MP roughly doubles storage for the same retention, which is the cost most quotes forget to mention.
What the extra pixels buy
The ability to crop into a face and still have something usable. On a wide shop-floor view you will never crop, so the detail is wasted.
Storage doubles
Same retention, twice the drive. Upgrading cameras without upgrading storage quietly halves how far back your footage goes, which people discover at the worst moment.
The sensible mix
4MP on the entrance and the till, 2MP everywhere else. You get identification where it matters and pay for storage only where it earns its keep.
Is 4MP worth it over 2MP?
Is 4MP better at night?
Not automatically. More pixels on a dark scene can mean more noise. A 2MP camera with a larger sensor often gives a cleaner night image than a cheap 4MP one.
What about 8MP?
Useful for wide scenes you intend to zoom into afterwards — a forecourt or a yard. For a shop it is usually money better spent on storage or a second camera.
